Fort Bayard Historic District

Military, medical, and frontier history at the 1866 cavalry post near Santa Clara — a National Historic Landmark with walking-tour signage.

Established in 1866 to protect miners and settlers; later became a U.S. Army tuberculosis sanitarium. Buffalo Soldier service is part of the post’s history.

The historic district preserves the parade ground, officers’ quarters, and the post cemetery. Self-guided walking-tour brochures are at the museum.

Best visited Friday–Sunday when the museum is open. Combine with Pinos Altos for an Old-West-themed day.
