Pinos Altos

Historic mining village 7 miles north of Silver City on NM-15. Old West atmosphere, mountain scenery, restaurants, the Hearst Church, and the Buckhorn Saloon.

Gold was discovered here in 1860. Pinos Altos retains adobe and log-cabin buildings, an 1898 Hearst-funded church, the Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House, and the Pinos Altos Cemetery.

NM-15 north is a winding 20-minute drive from Silver City โ€” slow, scenic, and a frequent on-the-way stop for travelers headed to the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

Best for: a long lunch at the Buckhorn followed by a stroll through the cemetery and the museum.
