The Rescue Mission Test, the Vulnerable User Problem, the Grandchildren Test, and the Boardroom Model all point at the same older word β€” stewardship. Building AI well is not optimization. It is the practice of caring for something powerful on behalf of people who cannot speak for themselves.

The word we stopped using

There is an old word that has nearly fallen out of technology conversations. Stewardship. It used to be the standard word for what someone is supposed to do with power they did not invent β€” with land, with a congregation, with a family business, with a public office, with a national park, with a forest. It carries an idea most of our modern vocabulary cannot quite reach. That what you have was given to you to take care of, that it will outlive you, that the people who come next will inherit it, and that they are watching.

AI is the most powerful inheritance our generation has been asked to steward. Most of the people who will live under it are not in the room. Some are not born. Some are in countries the builders will never visit. Some are in conditions the builders find hard to imagine. None of them get to vote on what we ship.

What stewardship requires

Stewardship is concrete or it is nothing. It changes what gets shipped, what gets paused, what gets refused, and what gets disclosed. It is not a slogan and it is not a values page. It is a working discipline.

  • Restraint β€” the willingness to not ship something that could be shipped, because it is not safe yet.
  • Honesty β€” telling users what the system can and cannot do, especially when it costs an engagement metric.
  • Inclusion β€” building with people the system will affect, not only people who can afford to influence the roadmap.
  • Accountability β€” every powerful capability has a named human responsible for it.
  • Time horizon β€” designing for the third user, the millionth user, and the user who will not be born for fifteen years.
  • Repair β€” when a system harms someone, the operator carries the cost, not the person who was harmed.

A small set of commitments

The version of this that has practical bite is a short, public set of commitments any builder can sign. Specific enough to be checkable. Modest enough to be real. Demanding enough to change behavior.

  • We will not ship a capability that fails the Rescue Mission Test on people we cannot afford to harm.
  • We will publish what our system is for, what it is not for, and how to reach a human about either.
  • We will keep a path back to a real person on every high-stakes decision our system makes.
  • We will measure long-term user strengthening, not only short-term satisfaction.
  • We will treat children as children, not as a demographic.
  • We will not optimize for emotional dependency, romantic intimacy, or spiritual substitution.
  • We will not deploy in public services or against the poor without recourse, audit, and right of appeal.
  • We will write down what would make us pause this system and we will actually pause it when those conditions are met.

The generational frame

It helps to picture the people who will inherit this. A teenager twenty years from now, who has never not had AI in her pocket. A pastor twenty-five years from now, sitting with a grieving family whose only counselor for the last six years has been a chatbot. A judge twenty years from now, deciding whether the algorithm that flagged the defendant deserves any weight at all. A factory floor where the human shift supervisor is now part of the AI’s loop, not the other way around. A child raised by a tutor that always agreed with him.

None of those scenes are inevitable. All of them are downstream of choices that get made over the next handful of years, mostly by people who are not in this conversation. The honest stewardship question is whether anyone in the room is actually thinking about those scenes. The answer, in most rooms most days, is no.

A closing word

I am sixty-six years old. I will not be on the receiving end of most of what we are about to ship. The people who will are the people we are supposed to be building for β€” the lonely, the confused, the poor, the addicted, the elderly, the grieving, the desperate, and the children who will grow up inside whatever environment we hand them.

I am not arguing against AI. I am arguing that the people building it carry a responsibility older than the technology, and that the older word for that responsibility β€” stewardship β€” is the one that does the work. The frameworks in this series are how to operationalize it. The choice to actually use them is the part nobody can automate.

We will be remembered by who AI helped, who it ignored, and who it stepped over. Stewardship is the practice of caring how that turns out β€” and of writing down the commitments today that will look obvious to our grandchildren tomorrow.

Why use the word "stewardship" instead of "responsible AI"?

"Responsible AI" has become a category of compliance asset. Stewardship is older, harder to fake, and carries the idea that the thing being cared for outlives the caretaker. That second part is the part the AI conversation keeps losing.

Aren’t these commitments self-imposed and unenforceable?

For now, yes. Self-imposed commitments are how every regulated industry has begun β€” long before regulators arrived, the serious operators wrote down what they would not do. The serious operators are the ones the regulators end up modeling on.

Is this anti-progress?

No. Stewardship is what progress looks like when it intends to be inherited. The opposite of stewardship is not speed. It is amnesia about who will live under what we build.
