Mr. James Bullard
c/o Mesilla, N.M.
Dear James โ
I write to inform you that we apprehended last Tuesday a young man called William Bonney, who calls himself "the Kid," for petty theft of provisions from Mr. Webb's store. He is being held in the town jail pending trial.
The boy is no more than fifteen years of age but already shows a temperament much like his late stepfather, whom you may recall from Santa Fe. I confess I have a curious sympathy for him though my duties as Sheriff oblige me to see the matter through.
In other news, the Hudson Hot Springs venture proceeds slowly. Richard sends his regards and asks after your wife and the new baby. We are all keeping well here despite the cold spring.
Yours faithfully,
Harvey H. Whitehill
Sheriff of Grant County
