How Artificial Neural Networks Are Inspired by the Brain

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are one of the most powerful tools in modern AI—and their origins are deeply rooted in our understanding of the human brain.

From Neurons to Networks

The basic building block of the brain is the neuron, a cell that receives, processes, and transmits information through electrical and chemical signals. Inspired by this, early AI pioneers designed artificial neurons—simple mathematical functions that take in inputs, apply weights, and produce outputs.

By connecting many artificial neurons together in layers, researchers created neural networks that could process information in ways reminiscent of biological brains. These networks learn by adjusting the strengths (weights) of their connections, much like synapses in the brain strengthen or weaken with experience.

Learning and Adaptation

Just as the brain learns from experience, artificial neural networks learn from data. Through a process called backpropagation, ANNs adjust their weights to minimize errors, gradually improving their ability to recognize patterns, translate languages, or play games. This learning process is inspired by Hebbian theory in neuroscience: "cells that fire together, wire together."

Layers and Hierarchies

The brain processes information in stages—visual signals, for example, pass through multiple layers of neurons, each extracting more complex features. Deep neural networks mimic this structure, with many layers that allow them to learn increasingly abstract representations. This hierarchical approach has enabled breakthroughs in image recognition, speech processing, and more.

Limits and Differences

While ANNs are inspired by the brain, they are vastly simpler and operate on different principles. The brain is massively parallel, energy-efficient, and deeply interconnected, while artificial networks are limited by current hardware and algorithms. Nonetheless, the interplay between neuroscience and AI continues to drive innovation in both fields.
