This is a guide to reading a 30-article investigation of orbital computing and space solar power. Its five parts move from the reasons for considering industry in space to the machines, operating arrangements, and public choices that such an industry would require.

Keep two systems distinct

A solar-powered computer in orbit uses electricity where it is generated and sends information elsewhere. A solar-power satellite intended to supply another location must transmit energy to a receiver. The series examines both ideas and the possible connections between them, without treating success in one as proof that the other will work.

Follow the engineering questions

The orbital-computing articles ask what useful tasks belong in space and what equipment those tasks require. Cooling, communications, radiation tolerance, repairs, launch costs, and replacement cycles all matter to the answer. The solar-power articles follow a different chain: collecting sunlight, converting it, transmitting power, receiving it, and comparing the result with other ways of supplying energy.
