Buying Coins When You’re Brand New (Day 1 Strategy)
If you have never bought a coin before, do not try to be clever. Be boring. Here is the safest first purchase you can make.
Day 1 is dangerous. Day 1 is when you are most likely to get ripped off by a smooth-talking salesman selling "rare" coins. Day 1 is when you accidentally buy silver-plated copper instead of real silver.
The "Day 1" Rule: No Numismatics
For your first purchase, you are banned from buying anything "collectible," "rare," "graded," or "limited edition." You are only allowed to buy weight.
The Recommended First Buy
Go to a reputable site (or local shop) and buy: 5 Ounces of Generic Silver Rounds.
- Design: Buffalo, Morgan Design, or Flag. (It doesn't matter).
- Price: Spot + $3.00 (approx).
Why This Works
- Low Risk: You are paying the lowest possible premium. Even if you sell it tomorrow, you lose very little.
- High Feedback: Holding 5 one-ounce rounds gives you a feel for the weight and sound of real silver.
- Liquidity: These are the easiest things to sell.
What to Expect
- The Package: Will be heavy for its size.
- The Look: Shiny, but maybe some scratches (bag marks). This is normal.
- The Feeling: Addiction. Once you hold real money, paper money feels like Monopoly cash.
