1921: The World Around This Coin
In 1921, the United States was shifting from wartime mobilization to a consumer decade shaped by automobiles, movies, and commercial radio. The year also closed one silver-dollar era and opened another when the Morgan Dollar gave way to the Peace Dollar in December.
Morgan Dollar production returned in 1921 after a seventeen-year pause. The Pittman Act had authorized melting millions of older silver dollars and required replacement coinage, giving George T. Morgan's design one final year before the Peace Dollar replaced it.
Coin and Mint Details
The U.S. Mint struck Morgan Dollars from 1878 through 1904 and once more in 1921.
The none mint mark identifies production at the Philadelphia Mint.
The design pairs Liberty on the obverse with an eagle, arrows, olive branch, and wreath on the reverse.
Coins could remain in bank storage, circulate in commerce, or be saved by families and collectors.
A Possible Journey*
