1923: The World Around This Coin
President Warren G. Harding died on August 2, 1923, and Calvin Coolidge took the presidential oath at his family home in Vermont. Automobiles and radio were becoming defining parts of American daily life as the decade's economy expanded.
The 1923 Peace Dollar belongs to Anthony de Francisci's design commemorating peace after World War I. Its radiant Liberty and resting eagle above the word PEACE made the silver dollar a deliberate statement about the country's postwar hopes.
Coin and Mint Details
The Peace Dollar debuted in December 1921; beginning in 1922, the Mint used a lower-relief version better suited to large-scale production.
The 1923 date places this coin in the series' original 1921β1928 production run.
The mint remains unstated because the available item evidence does not support a confident attribution.
Coins could remain in bank storage, circulate in commerce, or be saved by families and collectors.
A Possible Journey*
The exact path of this coin is unknown. A coin like it may have crossed a counter, rested in a bank bag, traveled in a pocket, or waited in a collection before reaching its next keeper.
