Spanish Civil War: Fall of Barcelona: Last Money of the Republic (mini)(VF)
Description
In November of 1938, the war between Francisco Franco’s Nationalists, backed by Mussolini’s Fascists and Hitler’s Nazis, and the Republicans, a coalition of communists, anarchists, socialists, and separatists, and supported in spirit by much of the free world, was well into its third year. With copper, nickel, and other metals used up by the war effort, stamps were used as currency. For ease of use, these were affixed to cardboard discs, emblazoned with the Republican coat of arms, which banks gave out for free. This round piece of paper currency, produced in Barcelona in 1938, is one of the last issues of the Spanish Republic. When Barcelona fell in 1939, so did the antifascists. Franco assumed control of the country and ruled as a strongman until his death in 1975.
