Description

Beginning around 1760, the industrialized nations of Europe began to colonize the rest of the world. Great Britain was the most successful, with an empire so vast that the sun was said never to set on it. By the end of the 19th century, even declining European players like Portugal were acquiring territory: colonizing, influencing, annexing. The so-called "Scramble for Africa" saw the Europeans slice and dice the Dark Continent, while the Sykes-Picot Agreement divvied up the remnants of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East. While European imperialism began to wane at the end of the Great War in 1918, the great powers of Europe held colonies well into the middle of the 20th century.
