Argentina '78: A Set of Three 1978 World Cup Commemorative Coins
Description
The 1978 FIFA World Cup was not without controversy. The Copa Mundial de Fútbol was hosted by Argentina, which was just two years removed from a military coup; the neo-fascist government of Isabel Perón, the third wife of Juan Perón, was replaced by a neo-fascist junta in 1976. The government ramped up its already oppressive practices, rounding up dissidents in concentration camps, censoring journalists, and crafting nationalist propaganda. Once the games started, none of that mattered. Led by the dashing striker Mario Kempes, who scored two goals in the final en route to winning the coveted Golden Boot, Argentina became the fourth host team to win the tournament. --This set contains three Argentine Coins, struck in 1978, to honor the championship: a 20 peso, featuring a throw-in; a 50 pesos, showing a player kicking the ball; and a 100 pesos, with the image of the Buenos Aires stadium. On the reverse of each coin is the logo.
