Description
Unlike the United States, Canada, recognizing the Nazi threat, entered the war in September 1939—and, in fact, declared war on Japan after the Pearl Harbor attack but before the U.S. Some 1.1 million Canadians—a tenth of the total population—fought in the war, most as volunteers. The Royal Canadian Navy participated in the rescue operation at Dunkirk and was a formidable force in the North Atlantic. Canadian physicists contributed to the Manhattan Project; the Montreal Laboratory developed some of the world’s first nuclear reactors. Most famously, the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division landed on ”Juno“ beach on D-Day—June 6, 1944, the day the tide turned for good in favor of the Allies.--This box contains one 4-cent stamp and four 5-cent coins that circulated in Canada during the Second World War: KM-33 (nickel, round, with beaver, 1937-42); KM-39 (tombac, dodecagonal, with beaver); KM-40 (tombac, dodecagonal, ”V“ for Victory, 1943-44); and KM-40a (chromium-plated steel, dodecagonal, ”V“ for Victory, 1944-45).
