Before the Ayatollah established the extremist Islamic Republic of Iran after the 1979 revolution, the country long known as Persia was ruled by the Shah, a U.S. ally, who initiated economic, social, agrarian and administrative reforms to modernize the country in what was called the “White Revolution.” Although Mohammad Rezā Pahlavī was an absolute monarch, Iran was a Westernized nation whose citizens enjoyed more freedom than it does today. This period of-economic prosperity is the Iran President Trump wants to Make Great Again. This rial coin, struck from 1971-75, shows the portrait of the last Shah of Iran.
