Description

Salome & John the Baptist: Aretas IV Nabataean Bronze Coin in Clear Display Box

This ancient bronze coin was struck under Aretas IV Philopatris, king of Nabataea from approximately 9 BC to AD 40. Its double-cornucopia design connects it to the Nabataean kingdom during the lifetime of Jesus and the turbulent reign of Herod Antipas.

Antipas ruled Galilee and Perea from 4 BC to AD 39. He divorced Phasaelis, daughter of Aretas IV, to marry Herodias—an act condemned by John the Baptist. According to the Gospels, Herodias’s daughter danced before Antipas and, at her mother’s urging, requested John’s execution. The daughter is traditionally identified as Salome, although the Gospel accounts do not name her or describe her performance as the later “Dance of the Seven Veils.”

After Phasaelis returned to her father, Aretas IV went to war against Antipas and defeated his forces. This coin offers a tangible connection to the Nabataean ruler at the center of that historical conflict and its wider biblical setting.
