Rescue a Conversation That Has Gone Off Track
Save the current project state and make the next step clear.

Save the current project state and make the next step clear.
The budget was $500. Then it became $350. The evening session moved to the morning. The upstairs room was dropped. Somewhere in the conversation, an invitation was drafted with three of the old details.
Now every answer seems to revive a different version of the project.
You can keep typing corrections. Sometimes that works. When it does not, the useful move is to gather the current facts and restart from a clean handoff.
A handoff is a short record that lets work continue without replaying the whole history. It should help another person as well as another conversation.
Recognize the signs of drift
Look for repeated use of old numbers, abandoned options returning as decisions, missing constraints, and claims that files were reviewed when they were never supplied.
A single mistake does not require a restart. First try a direct correction tied to the source. If the same problem returns, inspect the working context.
You may find that the assistant is not the only source of confusion. Perhaps your instruction says βuse the latest budgetβ while the uploaded file is an older version. Perhaps two people gave different directions and neither was marked as superseded.
The goal is to establish the current state, including your own unresolved choices.
Reconstruct the decisions from evidence
Use this fictional project log:
| Date | Recorded decision | Current status |
|---|---|---|
| September 2, 2026 | Planning budget $500; evening event suggested | Superseded |
| September 4, 2026 | Organizer set spending limit at $350 | Current |
| September 5, 2026 | Event moved to 10 a.m.βnoon on November 14, 2026 | Current |
| September 6, 2026 | Ground-floor Garden Room at Maple Hall selected; upstairs option dropped | Current selection; booking confirmation still needed |
| September 7, 2026 | Invitation draft v2 reviewed for wording | Wording reviewed; date, place, and booking status still need final reconciliation |
There are two clearly obsolete requirements: $500 and an evening event. The selected room is current, but selection is not the same as a confirmed booking.
That last distinction is easy to lose during summarization. Preserve it explicitly.
If the records conflict, do not let the assistant decide who had authority based on confident wording. Resolve the conflict with the responsible person or leave it open in the handoff.
Ask for a summary, then verify it yourself
An assistant can help gather a handoff from a long conversation:
Draft a compact handoff listing the current goal, decisions, superseded requirements, completed outputs, unresolved issues, and next action. Include only decisions supported by this conversation. Preserve uncertainty about approvals and completion.
Treat that summary as a draft. The same conversation that drifted may summarize incorrectly. Compare important details with the decision log and original files.
Check numbers, dates, selected options, and anything described as approved, booked, sent, or finished. Those words can cause consequential misunderstandings if they outrun the evidence.
Anthropic describes summarization and saved notes as approaches to maintaining continuity during long tasks, while noting that compression can discard important details. A reviewed handoff is a practical way to preserve the facts your next step needs. Anthropic: Context engineering for long tasks.
Write the handoff around the next job
For the exercise, a useful handoff is:
Project: Community workshop planning package.
Immediate goal: Reconcile invitation draft v2 with current event decisions and return a corrected draft for organizer review.
Current facts: November 14, 2026, 10 a.m.βnoon. Spending limit $350. Ground-floor Garden Room at Maple Hall is selected, but booking confirmation is pending.
Superseded: $500 limit, evening timing, and upstairs room option. Do not use these as current requirements.
Completed work: Invitation v2 exists and its wording was reviewed. Its event facts still need reconciliation. The decision log is supplied below.
Files: The complete text of invitation v2 is included with this handoff. No other prior files should be assumed available.
Open issue: Organizer must confirm the booking before the invitation is ready to distribute.
Next action: Compare the draft with the current facts, correct discrepancies, and keep the pending booking visible in the review note. Drafting only; distribution is outside this task.
Include the actual draft under the handoff. If it is missing, change the file statement and have the assistant request it. Never claim an attachment is present just because you intended to include it.
Restart deliberately
Open a new conversation or another suitable clean workspace. Supply the handoff and the material needed for the next task.
A new conversation does not necessarily remove every source of context. For example, ChatGPT can use remembered information from chats, files, and connected apps when memory is enabled. Review relevant context settings if old requirements keep returning. Restarting is not a privacy deletion method. OpenAI: Memory FAQ.
For this work, your explicit packet should say what governs the task. Keep it small enough to review, but include the source material needed to verify it.
You do not need to paste fifty abandoned drafts merely to prove they existed. Preserve them separately if useful; give the next task the authoritative current version.
Check understanding with a concrete question
βDo you understand?β can produce an unhelpful yes.
Ask instead:
Before editing, state the current date, hours, spending limit, selected room, and booking status. Identify any required material you cannot access. Then make the requested revision.
For this exercise, the understanding check should produce November 14, 10 a.m.βnoon, $350, Garden Room, and booking pending.
Then inspect the edited draft. Repeating the correct facts does not prove they were used correctly. Look specifically for the old $500 figure, evening timing, and language implying a confirmed reservation.
The check should resolve the actual risk. You do not need a long quiz about every sentence in the handoff.
Prevent the next tangle
Keep a small decision log outside the conversation. When a decision changes, record the new value and identify what it replaces.
Save reviewed outputs at meaningful milestones. Use status labels that describe the work: βdraft,β βfacts checked,β or βapproved for distribution,β according to what actually happened.
For a long project, end a working session with a short note: what changed, what remains open, and the next useful action. That note reduces the effort of returning after a few days.
The aim is not elaborate recordkeeping. It is making the few facts that govern the project easy to recover.
Students: restart from the current assignment
Students encounter the same problem when a research question changes, a teacher updates the rubric, or a group switches topics.
A student handoff should name the current question, assignment requirements, approved sources, work already completed, and the next permitted use of AI. Include the actual relevant material.
Keep personal understanding visible too: βI understand the first two sources but need help comparing their methodsβ gives a better next task than βfinish the paper.β
If a teacher changes the requirements, mark the older instructions as superseded. Do not allow an attractive earlier outline to overrule the current assignment.
Your exercise
Create a short invitation draft that contains the obsolete evening timing and an internal planning note using $500. Use the decision log to prepare a handoff, then correct the draft and note in a fresh conversation.
For a second trial, omit the draft and see whether the assistant identifies the missing material. It should not claim to have edited a file it cannot inspect.
Completion check: Resumed work uses current decisions, preserves the pending booking, and accurately describes which material was available.
