A community learning group wants an outdoor science activity. Someone suggests observing clouds and contributing to a NASA-supported project.
Within minutes, the group has a dozen links. It still does not know what to do next.
That is a common research problem. Collecting information feels productive, but a folder of links is not a decision. A useful brief answers a defined question, shows the supporting evidence, and identifies the remaining checks that matter.
In this lesson, the program is real and the proposed group activity is fictional. We will investigate whether a Silver City learning group could sensibly prepare a small introductory session using GLOBE Observer's Clouds tool. We are not announcing an event or claiming that a local group has approved one.
Define a question small enough to answer
βResearch citizen scienceβ is enormous. A narrower brief asks:
Should a fictional community learning group prepare one supervised introductory cloud-observation session using GLOBE Observer? Identify the program's purpose, participation requirements, educational opportunities, and local decisions that remain unresolved. Use current official material. Do not book, register, or submit observations.
The audience is the organizer. The immediate decision is whether to prepare a pilot. The scope excludes a full curriculum, a local weather forecast, and proof of educational outcomes.
These boundaries prevent the research from drifting into every interesting topic connected with clouds.
Build a source plan around the questions
Use this public-source packet, reviewed September 8, 2026:

These pages have different jobs. A scientific explanation does not establish permission to hold an event in a particular park. The app's participation page does not prove that students will improve their grades.
List those gaps before writing. Then the assistant is less likely to fill them with attractive assumptions.
Search in rounds with a purpose
Begin with enough breadth to understand the program. Next, follow gaps that could change the decision: required data, account arrangements, local logistics, and what the program does with observations.
For the proposed beginner session, there is no need to read every atmospheric-science paper before deciding whether to prepare a demonstration. If the group later wants to analyze scientific trends, the source requirements will expand.
Keep a compact research log: question, source examined, useful finding, and unresolved issue. Do not count duplicate summaries as separate support.
When two sources appear to disagree, compare dates, definitions, and measurement methods. A document describing required observations may coexist with another describing optional observations. That is not necessarily a contradiction.

The following roughly 600-word example combines official facts with explicitly identified planning judgments. It is a draft decision aid for the fictional group.

Preparing a small pilot is reasonable, provided the organizer first checks participation arrangements, a suitable location, and the group's supervision needs. This is a planning judgment, not a finding that a Silver City event has been approved or that the activity will produce a measured learning gain. The immediate next step is preparation for one trial, followed by a decision about whether to repeat it.
GLOBE Observer offers a Clouds tool that guides people through recording conditions they observe. Its overview identifies location, overall cloud cover, and relevant surface conditions as required data. Other observations, including cloud type and photographs, are optional additions. The participation page describes downloading the app and registering with an email address before following its observation prompts. The organizer should review current account terms and the institution's rules before deciding how adults or students will participate. The existence of an app does not settle who should hold an account, which devices are available, or whether a particular group may upload location information. The program's data page explains that observations within fifteen minutes of a satellite overpass are matched with satellite data for analysis. It also provides downloadable datasets and version notes. That creates an optional later lesson about comparing observations and checking dataset versions. For the local pilot, the organizer still needs a usable site, permission where required, a weather decision, an accessible participation option, and a plan for supervision. No site assessment, local forecast, or participant consultation was performed for this example. A seated observation option, a shared demonstration, or an indoor review of previously collected data could be considered when outdoor participation does not fit the group. These are proposed adaptations to evaluate, not confirmed program arrangements.
A practical trial could ask participants to describe the sky independently, compare observations respectfully, and explain one uncertainty before entering data. AI could help prepare vocabulary notes or a reflection sheet, but it should not invent observations or replace the program's instructions. The organizer can judge the trial by whether participants followed the observation process, understood what they recorded, and identified questions they could not answer. The source packet is sufficient to justify preparing a pilot, with the listed local checks. It is insufficient to promise academic improvement, zero cost, universal accessibility, or scientific conclusions about the town. Before proceeding, name a coordinator, confirm the participation method, and review the proposed site and materials. Notice what the brief does
It answers the immediate question early. It uses official program material for program facts and labels the local proposal as a judgment. It names the missing evidence without turning every gap into a reason to abandon preparation.
It also avoids claiming that the recommended activity is proven superior to alternatives. The source packet does not contain that comparison.
This is a bounded practical brief, not an exhaustive literature review. If the question were whether cloud observation improves science achievement compared with another curriculum, the research plan would need appropriate educational studies and a different standard of evidence.
Students: turn research into an argument you understand
Students can use the same sequence: define the question, map evidence needs, inspect sources, compare findings, and write a supported answer.
Follow assignment rules about AI use. Keep notes showing which sources you read and what each contributes. A useful request is:
Help me identify gaps in my evidence map. Do not write conclusions that my sources do not support. Ask me to explain how each source relates to my research question.
If a source complicates your first idea, keep it in the analysis. Research is allowed to change the question or the answer.
Know when to stop
Stop the current round when you can answer the defined question, support the important claims, describe material uncertainties, and identify a practical next step.
Do not stop merely because you reached a target number of links. Do not continue merely because more links exist.
For a consequential decision, an unresolved fact may prevent action even when the writing is finished. Mark that distinction: βbrief complete; site permission unresolvedβ is more useful than a vague statement that everything is ready.
Your exercise
Use the four public sources to write your own approximately 600-word brief for a learning group. Add a short research log and three questions the organizer must resolve locally.
Check every program claim against the linked page. Keep your proposed adaptations separate from official requirements. If current pages change, update your evidence notes and explain the difference.
Completion check: Every important conclusion has support or an explicit limitation, and the brief ends with a decision or next action that follows from the evidence.
