Prepare for Exams with Practice, Recall, and an Error Log

Your notes look familiar. The explanations make sense while you read them. You scroll through another generated summary and feel increasingly prepared.
Then a blank answer box asks you to explain the idea without the notes. Familiarity turns out to be a poor substitute for a usable answer.
Exam preparation should include attempts under conditions that resemble the assessment. AI can help organize topics, draft practice questions from authorized material, and review mistakes. The crucial work includes closing the assistant and seeing what you can do.
Map the assessment before generating questions
List the learning objectives, question formats, permitted tools, timing, and any agreed accommodations. Use actual course information rather than an assistantβs guess about what the teacher will ask.
For this original fictional quantitative-reasoning mock test, the objectives are unit rates, linear equations, survey scope, and the limits of a causal claim. The practice format is five questions, ten points, and fifteen minutes. Use paper and pencil without an assistant; this exercise assumes no calculator. Adjust a real rehearsal to the assessmentβs actual permitted tools and accommodations.
These are illustrative practice conditions, not a standardized diagnostic test or a prediction of a course grade. The value lies in exposing specific strengths and gaps.
Generate questions and check the key separately
Try:
Create practice questions from these authorized objectives and examples. Keep questions separate from the answer key. For each answer, give the reasoning and the source or calculation used to check it. Avoid ambiguity and do not copy restricted assessment items. Flag any question whose answer depends on information not supplied.
Review the questions before using them. Does each one test an objective? Does it have enough information? Is the answer key correct? A question can be grammatically clear and still have multiple reasonable answers.
For an unfamiliar topic, have an instructor, tutor, or knowledgeable peer review the key where appropriate. Generating the questions and asking the same system βAre these correct?β is not an independent check.
Attempt the mock test
Set the answer section aside. Allow fifteen minutes for this fictional exercise.
Question 1: Unit rate. Five identical tickets cost $30. Each ticket has the same price and there are no extra charges. What do eight tickets cost? Show the unit price.
Question 2: Linear equation. Solve 7 β 2x = 17. Show your operations and check the result in the original equation.
Question 3: Parentheses. Solve 2(x + 3) = 14. Explain how you handled the expression inside the parentheses.
Question 4: Survey scope. In a voluntary club survey, 26 of 40 respondents say they want an extra meeting. What percentage of respondents is that? Does the result establish the percentage of all students who want an extra meeting? Explain.
Question 5: Causal reasoning. Students who chose to attend an optional workshop later had a higher average score than students who did not attend. Does that comparison alone establish that the workshop caused the difference? Name one additional piece of information that would help evaluate the claim.
Record unanswered questions rather than filling them with a guess you later remember as knowledge. You may also note confidence before checking. A confident error is especially useful to identify because it might otherwise escape review.
Check the answers and the reasoning

Alternative valid reasoning should receive the corresponding credit. For Question 5, prior motivation, the selection process, or other relevant design information may also be useful. A different phrase is not automatically a wrong answer.
If you ask AI to review your work, provide the rubric and keep its judgment provisional. Inspect any disagreement against the problem and key. An assistant should not deduct credit merely because you used a valid method different from its preferred one.
Turn mistakes into a small error log
Use four columns: task, mistake, corrected principle, and next attempt. Here is an illustrative log, not a record of a real studentβs performance:

Do not write βstudy everything againβ in every row. The log should reduce uncertainty about what to practice next.
After correcting a question, try a fresh one before declaring the issue resolved. Repeating an answer you just saw tests something different from producing a solution to a new task.
Use recall and spacing deliberately
In experiments with undergraduates studying prose passages, Roediger and Karpicke found that retrieval practice supported better delayed recall than additional study under the tested conditions, even though short-delay outcomes differed. This is evidence for practicing retrieval, not a promise about an individual exam score or a chatbot product. Roediger and Karpicke, 2006
Plan more than one encounter with a difficult idea. An illustrative schedule might be: review the correction today, attempt a new question in two days, and revisit it later in the week. The exact gaps should fit the course and your performance; this is not a universal optimal schedule.

Mix tasks once you can begin them, so you must choose a method instead of automatically repeating the previous one. If the mixture becomes so difficult that you cannot identify any starting point, return briefly to a worked example and then try again.
Rehearse the real conditions fairly
If the exam is closed-book, include closed-book practice. If it allows a reference sheet, practice finding and using information on the sheet you are permitted to bring. If it includes an oral explanation, speak the explanation rather than only reading it silently.
Follow agreed accommodations in a rehearsal. The purpose is to practice the relevant intellectual task under appropriate conditions, not to remove supports that belong in the assessment.
Use your own practice materials or authorized examples. A leaked or restricted exam does not become acceptable preparation because an assistant paraphrases it. When in doubt, ask the instructor for a permitted source of practice questions.
Practice: check a new question after review
After reviewing your error log, attempt these new tasks without help:
Four notebooks cost $18 at a constant unit price. What do six cost?
Solve 9 β 3y = 30 and verify it.
Eighteen of thirty volunteers express interest in a program. State the percentage and the population to which it directly refers.
Transfer answer check: The totals are $27, y = β7, and 60 percent of the thirty volunteers. Explain the methods and the population limit; the numbers alone do not complete the task.
Completion check: You completed an attempt before viewing answers, identified specific errors, and tested at least one correction on a new question. Your study plan responds to that evidence. Any claim of improvement refers to actual recorded attempts, not an assistantβs prediction or a repeated answer you had just read.
