Create Useful Images from a Clear Visual Brief
Specify what the image must communicate and where it will appear before generating alternatives.

Specify what the image must communicate and where it will appear before generating alternatives.
The illustration is beautiful: warm light, a table full of books, and people enjoying a conversation. Then you place the headline over it. Every available space contains a face, a hand, or a bright object. The image cannot do the job it was made for.
A visual brief prevents some of this wasted effort. It describes purpose, composition, placement, and the details that must be accurate. It also tells you how to compare alternatives without choosing only the most visually impressive one.
AI image generation is useful for exploring scenes and visual directions. A generated image still needs an editor who understands its context and can inspect what it implies.
Define the communication job
For this original teaching example, the image will introduce an article about organizing a small reading gathering. It is a conceptual editorial illustration, not a photograph of a real event or a depiction of a verified venue.
The target layout is a wide article header, with a working design size of 1600 by 900 pixels. The left third should remain visually quiet for a headline added in the layout editor. The main activity should sit toward the right, with enough margin for a modest crop.
Those are delivery requirements. They do not guarantee that every generator can output that exact size or preserve a perfect blank area. Check the selected tool’s controls and inspect the resulting asset.
A separate square thumbnail may need a different composition. Cropping a wide scene is not always enough.
Describe visible choices
“Make it inspiring and professional” leaves the model to guess. Describe the scene in terms a reviewer can inspect: viewpoint, subject placement, lighting, palette, objects, and style.
An original brief might specify three fictional adults at a round table, a few plain-cover books, an eye-level view, soft daylight, and a restrained palette of deep teal, warm cream, and a small ochre accent. The style is a clearly illustrated scene with simplified shapes.
Avoid requesting a real organization’s sign, a recognizable public figure, or a particular person’s likeness unless the project actually calls for it and the relevant permissions and context are established. For this illustration, those details add no value.
Adobe’s Firefly guidance encourages descriptive prompts and refinement of visible elements such as style and lighting. Write a prompt with reviewable constraints
Try:
Create a clearly illustrated editorial scene for an article about a small neighborhood reading gathering. Show three fictional adults around a round table on the right side of a wide composition. Include a few books with plain covers, soft daylight, and simple shapes in deep teal, warm cream, and a restrained ochre accent. Keep the left third quiet and uncluttered for a headline that will be added separately. Use an eye-level view. Avoid embedded text, logos, recognizable real people, and documentary styling. Preserve useful margin around the main subjects.
This is a sample prompt for the reader’s exercise. No image has been generated or reviewed for this manuscript.
Ask for a small number of alternatives. A large uncontrolled batch can make comparison harder. If you change the subject, style, lighting, and crop at once, you may not know which change improved the result.
Compare compositions before decorative details
You can explore three approaches while keeping the subject consistent:

These are planning options, not evaluated outputs. Once you generate or commission actual images, record which requirement each meets or misses.
Choose the option that supports the article. A dramatic scene with a large crowd may attract attention but misrepresent a guide to a small gathering. An image can be aesthetically strong and editorially wrong.
Inspect the whole image
Check people, objects, lettering, and spatial relationships. Look for inconsistent hands, impossible chair legs, books merging into a table, repeated faces, stray marks resembling text, and reflections that do not fit the scene.
Also inspect implications. Does a wheelchair appear blocked by furniture? Does the scene suggest alcohol is served when the article says nothing about it? Does a sign identify a real venue by accident? These details can communicate claims the caption never states.
At a small display size, focus on silhouette, composition, and message. At full size, inspect defects and edges. Both reviews matter because an artifact may look acceptable as a thumbnail and fail in a large header.
Use a short rubric: fits the purpose, preserves space for text, reads at the intended size, contains no distracting defect, and implies no unsupported real-world event. A simple pass or revise decision is often more useful than a vague aesthetic score.
Distinguish an illustration from evidence
A generated scene can visualize an idea, but it does not document attendance, a facility, a scientific result, or someone’s actions. Label conceptual imagery where the context could otherwise mislead.
For the reading article, an appropriate caption is: “Conceptual illustration of a small reading gathering.” A caption such as “Neighbors at last Saturday’s successful event” would claim an event and an outcome that were never documented.

Keep the caption, provenance record, and factual source checking connected. None automatically replaces the others.
Review rights and the intended use
Check the current terms for the actual tool and model used, along with any reference-image permissions. A service may offer several models with different conditions; do not assume a familiar interface settles every rights question.
In the United States, the Copyright Office’s 2025 report explains that protection depends on sufficient human authorship and that prompts alone do not establish authorship of generated expression. Human selection, arrangement, or modification may matter depending on the work. This addresses copyrightability, not every separate question about third-party rights or permission to use an output. Record the tool, date, references, major edits, and intended use. Avoid promising exclusive ownership or universal commercial clearance without an appropriate basis.
Prepare the asset in its actual layout
Add exact headline text through a suitable layout tool so spelling and typography remain editable. Check contrast against the actual background, not a imagined blank area.
Inspect the crop at the sizes your publication uses. Upscaling may increase pixel dimensions, but it does not prove that an image has gained accurate detail. For factual labels, charts, and exact diagrams, use tools designed to preserve the required data and geometry.
Write an appropriate text alternative based on the image’s role. If it is decorative, handle it as decorative in the publication system. If it communicates information, describe the relevant information. Do not pack every visual detail into the description when the reader needs only the scene’s purpose.
For students: show the brief and the review
Follow course rules for generated assets and references. Submit the visual brief and explain why you selected an image, what you changed, and what remains limited.
A generated depiction of a laboratory setup is not evidence that you built or used it. A conceptual historical scene is not a primary-source photograph. Label the distinction and keep factual illustrations tied to appropriate references.
Practice: brief and evaluate
Create a visual brief for an original article illustration. Plan three composition approaches and a five-item review rubric. If you generate images with appropriate access, inspect the actual results and record which you accept. Otherwise, use sketches to test composition and text placement.
Completion check: The selected image or approved plan fits the publication purpose, leaves usable space, and distinguishes illustration from evidence. Required rights information and reference provenance are recorded. Any claim that the image passed inspection refers to an actual asset you reviewed.
