Appendix D β Glossary of Frequency Terms
A comprehensive glossary of terms used throughout the Brainwave Frequency Tuning series, from 'alpha band' to 'VALIS.' Covers neuroscience, esoteric traditions, and practical terminology.
Appendix D β Glossary of Frequency Terms
Alpha band (8β13 Hz): Brainwave frequency associated with relaxed, calm wakefulness. Increases with eye closure, meditation, and biofeedback. Decreases with stress and anxiety.
Alpha burst: A sudden increase in alpha power (~2 seconds) in the right temporal lobe preceding creative insight. The brain suppresses competing activity to allow the novel connection to surface.
Alpha-theta bridge: The transition zone between alpha and theta (approximately 7β9 Hz). Associated with flow states, creativity, and access to unconscious material.
Autonomic nervous system (ANS): The part of the nervous system that regulates involuntary functions (heart rate, breathing, digestion). Divided into sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branches.
Binaural beats: Perceived beat created when two slightly different frequencies are presented separately to each ear. The brain "hears" the difference frequency and may entrain to it. Most effective in the theta-low alpha range.
Brainwave entrainment (BWE): The practice of using rhythmic sensory stimulation (sound, light, vibration) to shift the brain's dominant EEG frequency toward a target frequency. Also called frequency-following response (FFR).
Chakra: Energy center in yogic and tantric traditions. Seven primary chakras are described, each associated with specific frequencies, colors, and aspects of consciousness.
Coherence: The degree to which brainwave oscillations are phase-synchronized across different brain regions. High coherence indicates integrated neural processing.
Core wound: An early experience or set of experiences that shapes the fundamental self-concept. Establishes a baseline brainwave frequency that the brain treats as "normal."
Default mode network (DMN): A network of brain regions active during rest, mind-wandering, and self-referential thought. Suppressed during focused external tasks.
Delta band (0.5β4 Hz): Brainwave frequency associated with deep, dreamless sleep. Involved in physical restoration, growth hormone release, and healing.
Earthing (grounding): Direct physical contact with the Earth's surface (barefoot on grass, soil, sand). Allowed free electron transfer and may reduce inflammation.
EEG (electroencephalography): Non-invasive measurement of electrical activity on the scalp. Primary tool for measuring brainwave frequencies.
Energetic cord: Esoteric concept β a subtle energy connection between people formed through emotional intensity, particularly trauma or conflict.
Entrainment: The synchronization of an oscillator to an external rhythmic stimulus. In brainwave entrainment, the brain's dominant frequency shifts toward the frequency of the stimulus.
Flow: State of complete absorption in an activity where action and awareness merge. Associated with theta dominance, transient hypofrontality, and alpha-theta coherence.
Frequency following response (FFR): The brain's tendency to shift its dominant EEG frequency toward the frequency of a rhythmic sensory stimulus (sound, light, or vibration).
Gamma band (40β100+ Hz): Brainwave frequency associated with cross-network integration, insight, non-dual awareness, and compassion. Elevated in long-term meditators.
GENUS (Gamma Entrainment Using Sensory stimulation): MIT-developed protocol using 40 Hz light and sound to induce gamma entrainment. Shows promise for Alzheimer's and brain health.
High-vibration foods: Metaphysical concept β foods claimed to raise the body's "vibration." The physiological correlates are nutritional quality, antioxidant content, and gut-brain axis effects.
Hyperscanning: Simultaneous EEG recording from two or more people to measure inter-brain synchrony during social interaction.
Hypnagogic state: The transition from waking to sleep. Naturally produces theta access and creative imagery.
Hypofrontality: Temporary decrease in prefrontal cortex activity. Associated with flow states, time distortion, and loss of self-consciousness.
Hz (Hertz): Unit of frequency β cycles per second. 10 Hz = 10 cycles per second.
Identity gravity: The principle that your self-concept anchors your brainwave frequency. Techniques produce temporary shifts; identity transformation produces permanent shifts.
Inorganic attachment: Esoteric concept β a form of energetic connection claimed to exist between a person and non-physical entities. No scientific validation.
Isochronic tones: Single tones that pulse on and off at a target frequency. Produce strong steady-state evoked potentials (SSEP). Generally more effective than binaural beats.
Law of Attraction: New Thought principle β like attracts like in mental and spiritual realms. Reframed through neuroscience: brain frequency filters perception, which shapes decisions, actions, and outcomes.
Master Mind: Napoleon Hill's concept β the coordination of two or more minds aligned toward a common purpose. Research on hyperscanning provides a neural correlate.
Photic stimulation: Rhythmic light stimulation at a target frequency. Drives steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP) in the occipital cortex.
Polyvagal Theory: Stephen Porges' theory of autonomic nervous system function. Describes the vagus nerve's role in social engagement, safety, and regulation.
Schumann resonance: Earth's fundamental electromagnetic resonance (~7.83 Hz). Produced by lightning in the cavity between Earth's surface and ionosphere.
Shadow work: Jungian practice of making unconscious content conscious. Applied to frequency work: identifying and dissolving blocks that anchor low-frequency patterns.
Solfeggio frequencies: A set of specific audio frequencies (396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852, 963 Hz) claimed to produce specific spiritual effects. No scientific validation.
Somatic: Relating to the body. Somatic approaches to trauma resolution work through the body's nervous system rather than through cognitive processes.
SSVEP (steady-state visually evoked potential): The brain's electrical response to rhythmic visual stimulation at a specific frequency. Used for photic entrainment and brain-computer interfaces.
Theta band (4β8 Hz): Brainwave frequency associated with memory integration, creativity, imagery, REM sleep, and the hypnagogic state.
Theta-alpha bridge: See Alpha-theta bridge.
Transient hypofrontality: See Hypofrontality.
Vagus nerve: The tenth cranial nerve, a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system. Vagal tone is associated with emotional regulation, social engagement, and health.
VALIS (Vast Active Living Intelligence System): Philip K. Dick's concept of the divine as an information system. A signal that can be received through the right "tuning."
