How to Create a Concept Map

By Randy Salars
Quick Answer β€” Consciousness

Create a concept map by starting with a central idea, branching related concepts, labeling connections, and refining the map as understanding grows.

✍️ Randy Salars

Short Answer

Start with a central idea, add related concepts as branches, and connect them with labeled lines that explain relationships. Use colors or symbols to group ideas, and keep revising as your understanding deepens.

Step-by-Step

  1. Start with the center:

Write the main topic or question in the middle of the page.

  1. Add first-order branches:

Add the most important related concepts around it.

  1. Connect and label:

Draw lines/arrows and label each connection with a phrase (for example: β€œcauses”, β€œincludes”, β€œleads to”, β€œrequires”).

  1. Expand outward:

Add sub-branches and examples as you learn more details.

5) Organize visually: Use colors, icons, or symbols to group related ideas and mark key nodes.

  1. Revise and refine:

Merge duplicates, rename vague labels, and improve relationship phrases.
