A detachment of thirty men had been sent
out from the camp to meet a wagon train with
supplies for the camp and when ten miles out
the wagons were found besieged by a band of
100 Indians. On seeing the troops approaching
the redskins scattered in all directions but im-
mediately returned to the attack on finding the
small number of men in the detachment. A
courier was sent back to call for reinforcements
but in the meantime an incessant fire was kept
up on both sides, resulting in the wounding of
one soldier and the killing and wounding of
several Indians, the exact number of which
could not be ascertained, as the redskins car-
ried their dying and wounded away. About
three hours after the courierβs departure troops
were seen coming at full gallop to the rescue.
As the troops rode up the Indians scattered in
all directions and the troop F pursued them but
abandoned the chase on account of darkness.
The wagon train was escorted to camp in safety.
