Hiking account of the Cleveland Mine in the Pinos Altos Mountains. The mine produced gold, silver, and copper from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Mining began prior to 1860. By 1868 six stamp mills employed 300 miners, eventually growing to 600. In 1905 a two-foot narrow-gauge railway, the Silver City, Pinos Altos and Mogollon Railroad (SC, PA & M) came to Pinos Altos. Ore shipped to the Silver City smelter. Declining silver prices forced the railroad to close in 1913. Empire Zinc Company mined zinc for WWI from 1916-1917. By 1922 the entire Cleveland Mill Camp was abandoned. References the archaeological site LA 167597 with 65 associated features. Also references the nearby Tyrone Mine.
