Affidavit_of_Frank_Springer_concerning_Samuel_Beach_Axtell Notes: Affidavit dated August 30, 1877 of Frank Springer, Colfax County, New Mexico, concerning his interview with Samuel Beach Axtell, Governor of New Mexico, in Governor's office in Santa Fe, concerning the removal of the district courts from Colfax County to Taos County, and the annexation of Colfax County to Taos County, and a bill in the Legislature for it signed by the Governor, that the people of the county were good people, law abiding, exception was Tolby murder, and the Governor should go there himself to examine the situation, and the Governor refused. Axtell said he would have Allison arrested. Affidavit also gives information on Colfax County residents, who had sent petition to government, who are mainly Americans, as different from Taos, where the people were Hispanic and did not know English lanaguage, Colfax opposed Taos Penitentes serving on juries, indicting people from Colfax, no Colfax people on such juries. Comments on Axtell traveling with Wilson Waddingham looking at land grants, speculators, and Axtell and Senator Dorsey and selling the Una de Gato Land Grant. and HL introduction page overlaid by document.
