C. B. Stocking, who for several years was bullion messenger for the Carlisle company, is again in trouble. He was jailor at Florence, Arizona, and beat an unruly Mexican prisoner over the head with a pick handle, fracturing his skull. The condition of the victim is serious. Stocking was arrested, but released on bail. The assault was committed inside the jail, and pretty strongly condemned by the Enterprise of Flor- ence. Stocking bears the reputation of being- one of the best and quickest shots in the country, and is a man of good conduct, but with a temper uncontrollable at times. He has killed a good many men in his time, one at Carlisle and one or two since leaving here. There is nothing of the braggadocio or β€œbad man” style about him. He is plain, unassuming and gentlemanly, and until the last trouble, has always had the law and justice on his side.
