Cook’s Peak, towering majestically as a
land mark, which can be seen for fifty miles
in all directions, looks silently down upon the
graves of innumerable brave men, over whose
butchered remains the spectre sentinel stands
a lonely vigil. Dozens of Americans and Mexi-
cans who left their homes in the full flush and
vigor of manhood, never reached their desti-
nation, nor were they ever heard of afterwards
in life; their mangled remains are scattered
along the sides of the Cook’s canyon road.
