He  is  the  grandson  of  “Cadette,”  the  last
great  war  chief  of  the  Mescaleros  and  the
nephew  of  “San  Juan”  the  late  great  peace
chief  of  that  tribe.  Cadette  led  five  hundred
Mescalero  warriors  on  the  war  path;  San  Juan
led  them  to  cultivate  the  soil,  live  in  houses  and
send  their  children  to  school.
