THE EAGLE WEDNESDAY MAY 20 lttU demoralization ot the financial inter ests of continental Europe and
the Orient by political disturbances the former outlets of the enormous accu mulations of money in
London have been closed The rivalry of the Argen tine Republic at this time therefore appears of
more importance than it would perhaps in normal financial times In the Record Mr V E Ortis pointed
out recently the growth of the agricultural industry and the cattle in terest of Argentine An
enormous ex pention was shown in the agricultural area of the country which only a short time ago
was almost entirely pastoral The change is remarkable and cereals now form a more important part of
the export trade than hides meat and wool although there has been an increase in these shipments In
1893 the wheat acreage of the republic was 3305000 and in 1895 7340000 acres In 1884 1 008000 tons
of wheat were exerted chiefly to Europe and the total ship ment oí cereal products mat year amounted
to 1881000 tons Altliougl there was a falling off in the wheat crop last year the shipments of
cereals were 309000 tons more than in 189 when
