Sbe Dail light MONDAY JULY 20 1896 LIBERTY BELL TIED UP Practically Heid in Pawn by a Man in Chicago William O McDowell President of the Liberty Bell Association Said to Be Heavily Short in His Accounts llas Resigned The Columbian liberty bell which created such a furore at tire worlds fair is practically ill pawn in Chicago The president of the Liberty Bell as sociation is said to be 20000 short in his accounts His name is William O McDowell His resignation has been accepted by the executive committee of the organization The resignation was caused by reasop of large dis crepancies in his accounts 20000 of which he is said to have admitted hav ing misappropriated Mrs Minnie F Ballinger recording secretary of the association and regent for the Columbian liberty bell in Wash ington made this statement Her hus band is the counsel for the association and is now in correspondence with an auditing committee in New York which is looking thoroughly into Mr McDojv ells accounts The result of the committees inves tigations said Mrs Ballinger is that between 60000 and lOOOOO belonging to the association is missing McDowell claims to have used only 20000 but
