Last Monday night the Mongolian portion
of our population, forgetting the cares of the
restaurant, laundry, junk shop, and fan tan, de-
voted their time and energies, in the attempt to
solve the problem whether the next deal at faro
would be single or, double out, or three one.
The game ran smoothly for a time and each
of the pig tails was betting his favorite system,
until one who had no fear of a hereafter, pur-
loined a bet belonging to another. A dispute
arose and it was finally decided by arbitration.
The would be thief objected and indulged in an
opprobious epithet, and for his temerity receiv-
ed a sever thwack on the eye by a Chinaman be-
longing to one of the six companies and the only
representative of his company in town. Then
