Mr. Charles Brown, an old resident and
prominent citizen of Tucson, was one of the
owners of the ferry at the time of the calamity,
and it was only by an accident that he did not
share the fate of his companions. A few days
before the Indians made the attack, an old chief
whom Mr. Brown had befriended in numerous
ways, came to him and told him of the murder-
ous intention of his tribe and advised him to
leave immediately. He therefore went to his
companions, apprised them of the danger they
