On the 22d of last month Dr. Mason was shot to death in Kingston by James Hiler, whose wife was, and still is, the proprietress of the Mountain Pride Hotel, of that place. Hiler had but recently returned to Kingston from Texas, where he had been for the past nine months. He refused to talk, and the cause of the killing remained shrowded in mystery up to the day of trial. Mr. and Mrs. Hiler had arrived in Kingston some two years ago, bringing with them several thousand dollars. With a part of this means, they purchased the Mountain Pride Hotel, and it is said the rest of the money was soon squandered by Mr. Hiler in dissipation. The couple had not lived happily, and two weeks after their last child was born Mr. Hiler left for Texas, after having consented to his wife applying for a divorce. The little woman was left in destitute condition, but went bravely to work to care for her little flock, doing her own chamber work and waiting on the table. To relieve her financial distress she applied to William Hubbard, well known in this city, and to Dr. Mason, who accommodated her with various loans.
