Forty Years of Progress Represented in the
Success of the 1938 N.M.M.L Commencement
Commencement is the season for
summing up the year’s activities and
the term, “most successful year” is
heard often. It is right and fitting
that this should be, for the improvements
made year by year are represented
in the growth and improvement
of the succeeding sessions. Each year
should be a more successful one than
the preceding ones. The 1938 Commencement
marks the close of the
At the graduation ceremonies on
Tuesday morning, Governor Clyde
Tingley presented diplomas to eighty-four
graduates. One hundred one
cadets received High School certificates.
The Governor, the Board of
Regents, The Superintendent and
other Institute officials sat on the
platform.
The disciplinary record for the
year again showed improvement.

can truly be said to have been the
best to date. This issue records many
of the outstanding accomplishments.
Some of the greatest gains were made
individually, and many cadets know
for themselves progress that is never
formally recorded. Each one knows
in his conscience whether or not he
has made the grade, and can bear
testimony to these words of the Commencement
speaker: “the only applause
worth winning in life is a curtain
call you honestly can give yourself.”
The Class of 1938 was a good one,
and a class the Institute has held in
high regard.

Each one knows

The Class of 1938 was a good one,
and a class the Institute has held in
high regard. The members were men
well known; thirty-six of them had
been enrolled three years or longer,
and the leaders were tested and tried.
The Institute authorities are proud to
have these young men join the ranks
of the alumni, and bring the total
number of graduates of New Mexico
Military Institute to one thousand
three hundred thirty-five.
ports; two hundred forty-eight received
zero demerits, with a grade of
“A” in deportment. Seventy-three
men in the Junior College earned
Certificates of Excellenece for academic
work of superior quality, and
the number of Certificates awarded
them was one hundred seventy-one.
In the High School division, ninety-one
cadets earned two hundred twelve
Certificates of Excellence certifying
to superior work in subjects in which
they were enrolled.

The graduation ceremonies opened
in the traditional manner with the
playing of the Star Spangled Banner
of Captain Jack Fletcher. The audience
stood to receive the graduating
class, and Dr. Austin D. Crile, Institute
Chaplain, made the invocation.
Dempster MacMurphy, ’15, made a
splendid address to the graduates,
saying in conclusion: “Whatever you
have learned here, whatever you have
failed to learn, the spirit of the Corps
has carved into your hearts and minds
contempt for fear. Guard well that
contempt. Gentlemen, and keep it.
Then, though you lose everything else
in life, you still will win.” The complete

Colonel Pearson announced the following
honors and distinctions and
pi'esented all of them except the Mac-
Murphy Prize, which was presented
by the donor: Alumni Scholarship;
New Mexico Military Institute
Scholarships; The William McDonald
Spencer Memorial Scholarship; The
Herman Fleishman Scholarship; The
J. Ross Thomas Medals; The Ruppert'
Award; and The MacMurphy Prize.

We herewith present to you our report of the Commencement activities and in a measure our report of the past year’s work. It has been
an unusually successful year from every standpoint.
We were greatly pleased to have so many of our alumni and friends with us during the Commencement activities. We are sorry that all
of you could not.be present to enjoy with us Dempster MacMurphy’s splendid address to the graduating class and the colorful activities presented
by the cadets.
If any of your friends or acquaintances are planning to enter the Institute next fall, they should submit their applications at an early date.
I do believe that we will find it necessary to close our enrolment on or before July 1.
