SELLING JINXES MOGOLLON MINERS
Eli Mader, a well known miner of Cooney,
died at the Benton House in Silver City Wednes-
day morning, of typhoid malaria complicated
by lung disease. Eli, as he was familiarly
known, was one of the pioneers of the Mogollon
mines and with Capt. Burris discovered the
Laclede mine which as a stock deal on the St.
Louis market went to a giddy height and ex-
ploded, leaving stockholders and miners an un-
pleasant reminder of the St. Louis stock sharps
in the way of worthless certificates and unpaid
wages. Mader and Burris did not realize during
the boom, expecting the company to proceed
with legitimate mining. After years of toil and
disappointments he was in a fair way to ac-
quiring a fortune having recently, in company
with Mr. Bulhman, bonded a mine on the Queen
lode to eastern capitalists for a large sum, re-
ceiving a forfeit of $3,000 down. A strange
fatality seemed to follow many of the old time
miners of the Mogollons. Jim Cooney was
killed by Indians when about to make a sale
for a quarter of a million; Kilgore died shortly
