Several days ago the elaborate wooden cornice, with the figures 1872 carved on the pediment, surmounting the H. M. Porter build- ing near the corner of Main and Spring streets, became loosened and fell off, dropping to the street below. The carved figures denoted the date of the building of the edifice. This corner for a number of years was the headquarters of the largest mercantile trade and bullion business done in Grant county. To the Mexican popula- tion, the establishment was known not by the name of the merchant, H. M. Porter, but by the emblem that glistened on the top of the cornice, a gilded mortar and pestle, hence when a Mexican enquired for the β€œtienda” of H. M. Porter, he asked for β€˜β€˜la tienda del almirez.” The reason for the mortar and pestle was that Dr. Bailey first opened there with an assortment of drugs.
