said that the prisoner was completely cooked
by the time he reached the county seat. It was
rough treatment, but the prisoner was lucky
to got off that easy.
There was a shooting scrape the other
night at Hermosa. A man by the name of
Sullivan was abusing another man named
Branson. Branson resented and drew his pistol
and shot Sullivan twice, wounding him in the
shoulder. Branson gave himself up at once, and
at his hearing before the justice of the peace,
was exonerated from all blame.
Antonio Carbajal, who killed a man in
Mesilla a few months ago, was given five years
in the penitentiary.
Sheriff Laird offers to furnish a gang from
the county jail every morning to sweep the
streets provided the city will furnish the brooms.
This is a good idea, and should be adopted by
the council.
