Mr. Baker had been employed by Thomas Conway, in New York, as stenographer and bookkeeper. Mr. Baker soon leased the Langer residence and went to house keeping. On Thurs- day of last week it was discovered by the New York World that Mr. Baker, in leaving the city, had made a mistake and brought his wife’s sister with him instead of his wife. This dis- covery created something of a commotion around the law office, but as Mr. Baker had been engaged several days in taking the evi- dence in the Bolton-Doak case, and as no other stenographer could read his notes, nothing was said about the matter until the work was com- pleted on Saturday, when Mr. Baker was un- ceremoniously “fired” from the office. Mr. Baker denied nothing, but claimed that he was not married to his wife. He had lived with her, but had a written contract, which he showed and really appeared to think that he had done nothing wrong.
