was answered quien sabe. He offered the

was too weak to drink; he left the canteen

cut open as with a knife from the front indi-
cating that the pocket had been sewed up.
The sheriff started George Parker on the trail.
The trail of the horse was followed for two
miles and a half toward Prescott Allen’s ranch
on Bear creek, but no trail could be found of a
man having followed the horse at any place.
The horse was trailed into the rocky ground
on the high hills between the western slope of
the Bear mountains and the slope of Walnut
creek, where it was abandoned. The deceased
had worked some time previous for Mr. Carter
who has a herd of sheep and goats on his ranch
at the head of Greenwood canon. At the time
of his death he was working for Prescott Allen,
and on the morning of the day he was murdered
borrowed a horse from Mr. Allen, and had gone
to Carter’s ranch, got his clothing and was on
his way back when assassinated. George Parker
communicated the news to Mr. Allen who said
he would look for the horse and if found would
notify the sheriff, but up to time of going to
press nothing has been heard from him. The
murdered man is well spoken of by his former
employers and by all who knew him.
