ng his prisoner to San Quentin. About
three and a half years ago Miller, according
to his own story, ran short of money and went
on the road between Florence and Casa Grande,
Arizona, to await the coming of Uncle Sam and
Wells, Fargo & Co., to replenish hij empty
purse. While waiting for the stage Dr. Hurley,
of Florence and his coachman drove along the
road and were halted by Miller. The highway-
man robbed the doctor and man of $52, and
then compelled them to assist him in holding
up the stage. After driving their team into the
brush he tied their hands behind them, put
masks on their faces and ordered them to stand
in the brush by the side of the road. While they
were in this position a man named Saix drove
up, and after he had contributed $25 to swell
Dr. Hurleyβs contribution he was treated in the
same manner as the other two and took his
position in the brush. When the stage arrived
Miller stood in the road and ordered the driver
to stop. The latter did so, and without waiting
to be told threw out the mail pouch and express
box and started on his way. Miller released his
unwilling assistants. They reported at Florence,
and a posse went out to arrest Miller. He was
tried for robbing the express company and sen-
tenced to twelve years in the Yuma jail.
