ayful six-shooter filled the air for several minutes, shots being exchanged about as lively as it was possible to pull the trigger. The room was cleared in short order immediately, no one remaining to see what was going on but the two principals and the ubiquitous reporter. Rodriguez stood at the lower end of the bar, where it was open, and after he had emptied his gun dropped to the floor behind the counter and reloaded his weapon. Cantley being out of ammunition, retired gracefully, and left Rodriguez in possession of the room. Returning with another gun, the Marshal took his stand outside the door, and whenever Rod- riguez showed himself, both fired simultane- ously. A crowd had gathered in the meantime, several volunteering to assist the Marshal, but their services were not required. A couple of Winchesters were brought on the scene, when Rodriguez in answer to the repeated demands of the Marshal, threw his gun on the floor and came out and surrendered himself. That Marshal Cantley had Rodriguez in his power and could have killed him had he felt so inclined, speaks well for him. Both men are brave, and that several bystanders were not hurt in the melee is one of those inexplicable circumstances which occur so frequently.
