May 12, 1883. In 1879 he also served as a member of the territorial legislature, of which he was an active and influential mem- ber. He was appointed major of the territorial militia by Governor Sheldon in 1884. He also served the city as president of the council in 1888. He has always taken great interest in the educational matters of his locality, serving as president of board of trustees of the indepen- dent school district comprising the city. When Governor Prince was called upon to appoint boards of management for the various terri- torial institutions created by the legislature, he named Hon. Robert Black as one of the regents of the agricultural college. He is recognized by his colleagues on the board as a most faith- ( 106 ) l Academy of Our Lady of Lourdes at the comer of Cooper and Kelly Sts. It was erected about 1885 and was a convent for years.
