The remarkable feature of this adventure
consists in these naked and bare foot Indians
having in forty days traversed on foot two thirds
of the state of Kansas, a large portion of Colo-
rado, and two thirds of New Mexico, without
having been seen, so far as known, by a single
white man; and this, while every exertion was
being made by the military and state officials to
discover their whereabouts and arrest them. I
have no hesitation in saying that no four white
men in the United States could accomplish the
same feat under the same circumstances.
