This spring continued to flow running due
north for twenty miles, then was lost in the
sand. In places it was two miles wide and from
four to twenty feet deep. When immigration in
1851 moved by the isthmus and the northern
route the miraculous water disappeared, as its
mission was accomplished and its divine work
done. But the memory of the “New River,” that
was caused by a sand bar below Yuma will long
be remembered by the thousands benefited by
it in 1850-51.
