White. It was understood that they were wait-
ing for a chance to come together. The oppor-
tunity came. The two men met in front of
Petersonβs store at the same time, White firing
the first shot. About ten shots were fired. White
received a ball in the abdomen and another in
the right shoulder, while Slough was wounded
in the hand. Both men were removed to the
hospital. On the person of White was found a
villainous-looking dagger, and the police had a
hard time disarming and taking him to the
hospital. Only one or two persons were present
at the shooting, for as soon as the fusillade
began the crowd scattered. The witnesses say
that White fired first and that he followed
Slough into the store for the purpose of killing
him. The story that Mr. Slough gives of the
affair is that his father-in-law induced his wife
to leave him, and he was not permitted to see
her. The doctors at the hospital say that the
chances for the recovery of White are very
slight, while the injury to the other duelist is not
of a serious character.
