Alberto Chacon, murder victim and horse theft suspect in Grant County
Alberto Chacon's body was found in a well belonging to the Copper Company in San Pedro, making it the town's first mystery [1][2]. Lane revealed his heart and lungs were in good condition [1][2]. The case was considered murder, as Chacon had been seen with money; investigators believed his killer struck him over the head with a blunt instrument, robbed him, and threw his body down the well [1][2]. About a year later, in October 1890, a Deputy Sheriff Taylor from Sierra County arrested a Mexican horse thief near Hillsboro [3]. The prisoner escaped, and the next morning Taylor encountered a Mexican named Chacon riding one of the stolen horses about a mile from Separ [3][4]. Chacon refused to surrender the horse unless he was paid $30, which he had paid for it [3][4]. During the dispute, Taylor fired two shots, wounding Chacon in the left breast and left arm [3][4]. Chacon then drew his pistol from his saddle and shot the deputy through the right breast, leaving him paralyzed and in precarious condition at Lordsburg [3][4]. No arrests were made, and opinion held that the officer was too quick with his pistol [3][4].
