Avaran Barrera (son of Juan Jose Barrera) was killed by Indian raiders in the Box Canon of
On Thursday of that week, Avaran, his father, and his brother Manuel left home with an ox team to bring vegetables from their garden in the box canon [4]. After loading, they were attacked by Indians firing from rocks on the west side of the canon [4]. Avaran was killed at the first fire, shot downward through the body [4]. After falling, he was beaten about the head with an axe taken from the wagon, which was found near his body covered in blood [1][2]. Tracks of two moccasined and one barefooted Indian were found at the spot [3]. The murder was described as one of pure wantonness, as the victims had nothing to tempt the attackers [2].
