B. F. Cady: Killed by Indians on Deer Creek Ranch, Grant County
In 1889 he was killed by Indians there [1][3][2]. According to Oscar Roberts, Cady was found forty yards from his house with his head all mashed; his body had decayed so it was impossible to tell how many shots he received [2][3]. He was naked from the waist up, with a single bullet hole through both legs [2][3]. His ears and nose had been cut off, and his head and breast were scalded with hot water from the meal he was preparing [2][3]. A Mexican guard discovered him about a day and a half after the killing, and he was buried by the guard and Wash Peters [2][3]. The Indians arrived on foot, stole twelve horses from Deer Creek, then took about twenty more at the Lang ranch of Head & Hearst [2][3]. Authorities assured the public the killers were not from the San Carlos reservation but a remnant band that had never surrendered [4].
