Belen (Helen): Future Railroad Metropolis in New Mexico
Belen, also called Helen, is a future railroad metropolis on the Belen Cutoff of the Santa Fe Railway, 31 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico [1][3][2]. Around 1905–1906, it had a population of 1,500 [1][3] and featured a $16,000 public school house, several large mercantile establishments, the Belen Patent Roller Mill (150 barrels daily), a large winery, three hotels, and a Commercial Club [3][2]. Belen was the largest shipping point in central New Mexico for wool, flour, wheat, wine, beans, and hay [3][2].
