Burro Mountains, New Mexico — Mining District Near Tyrone
The Burro Mountains, located some sixty or seventy miles from Deming, were a destination for prospectors and miners in the late 1800s [2]. By 1888, a stage route ran from Deming north to Cook’s Peak, then to John Brockman’s, Lone Mountain, Lyons & Campbell’s south pipeline, Cherry Creek, Oak Grove, and finally to the Burro Mountains before turning south to the Southern Pacific Railroad [4][5]. A number of mining camps operated in the range, including Gold Hill (ten miles south), Black Hawk (ten miles), Telegraph (twenty miles north), Cow Springs (fifteen miles), Bauna and Knott’s (twelve miles southeast), and the Carlisle (forty miles northwest in the Steeple Rock range) [1][3].
