C. R. Jackson: Trial for Killing Peter Frazier Near Carlisle
Jackson was tried for killing Peter Frazier near Carlisle, New Mexico, over a disputed goat flock and old Texas debts [1][2]. The men had known each other fourteen years earlier in Texas [1][2]. When Frazier arrived, Jackson was living in the mountains with goats [1][2]. Frazier forced Jackson to confess to owing horses or passing counterfeit money, then took a bill of sale for the goats [1][2]. After a claim by Jackson's son-in-law, Frazier went to take possession and was shot twice with a Winchester by Jackson [1][3]. Jackson claimed self-defense; a knife was found at the scene the next day [3]. Jackson fled, hid, and later surrendered to the sheriff [3]. The prosecution argued Jackson shot from forty yards in a cold-blooded murder [3]. An unproven rumor said Jackson had given Frazier $700 in counterfeit money [3]. The jury could not agree [3].
